Rupee falls 3 paise to 81.93 against US dollar

However, forex dealers said the influx of foreign funds into local stocks and the downward trend in crude oil prices capped the decline in the domestic unit.

In the interbank foreign exchange market, the domestic unit opened lower at 81.93 and moved in a range of 82.01 to 81.90 on the day.

The unit settled at 81.93 (temporary) against the US dollar, reflecting a loss of 3 pounds from the previous close.

On Friday, the rupee settled at 81.90 against the dollar.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which measures the strength of the greenback against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.29 percent to 102.54.

Crude oil prices were trading lower, with Brent crude falling 0.16 percent to $76.49 a barrel.

In the local stock market, the 30-share BSE Sensex index fell 216.28 points, or 0.34 percent, to settle at 63,168.30, while the broader NSE Nifty index fell 70.55 points, or 0.37 percent, to close at 18,755.45.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital markets on Friday buying shares worth Rs.794.78 crore, according to exchange data.
