Microblogging site Koo launches premium feature to start monetising content

In its first attempt to monetize its platform, Indian microblogging site Koo on Thursday launched its premium feature, which allows creators to monetize their content by creating custom subscription plans. In return, Koo will charge a fee for the platform.

With Koo Premium, creators will have the option to offer exclusive content to their subscribers for a weekly or monthly subscription fee.

The company said the new feature makes Koo the easiest platform to publish premium content and earn revenue, as creators will be able to categorize their content including text, videos, and images and publish it to subscribers. They can customize their subscription offerings, set their own prices, and have full control over their subscription content.

Currently available in India, the program may open up new opportunities for content creators across various content genres, including artists, financial experts, fantasy games, wellness, comics, musicians, sports, and more. Koo has tested this feature over the past month with more than 20 creators including Rishikaa Singh Chandel, Dr Cric Point and Aartii Naagpal and is now opening it up to creators across the country.

Koo was launched in March 2020, and it supports content in more than 20 international languages. To date, the app has been downloaded more than 60 million times and has users in more than 100 countries. In the coming months, Koo plans to add verified profiles like journalists, Bollywood actors, and cricketers on Koo Premium to interact with their subscribers.

“Creators are the backbone of any social platform. It is important that platforms respect their time and effort in creating content every day. Koo Premium is the first of many programs we are launching to democratize content creation and empower creators across the country to monetize their content them and building a sustainable stream of income from their passion,” Aprameya Radhakrishna, CEO and Co-Founder, Koo.

The platform previously offered free lifetime verification for VIPs, a 500-character limit for posts, and options to speak to type. It has also beefed up its security features to protect creators from impersonation and hate speech as well as enabling creators to use ChatGPT while crafting posts.
