No respite, retail tomato price further shoots up to ₹162/kg
Consumers continue to see red on tomato prices as retail prices for basic kitchen items rose to 162 rupees per kg on Thursday across the country due to tight supplies caused by rains in many parts.
Among metros, retail tomato prices remained highest at 152 rupees per kg in Kolkata, followed by 120 rupees per kg in Delhi, 117 rupees per kg in Chennai and 108 rupees per kg in Mumbai, according to data maintained by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs.
The average retail price of tomatoes across India was judged at INR 95.58 per kg on Thursday.
The data showed that the maximum rate was ₹ 162 per kg in Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, while the minimum rate was ₹ 31 per kg in Churu district in Rajasthan.
Tomato prices remained high in other major cities in the country.
In Gurugram, the retail price of tomatoes was 140 euros per kg, at 110 rupees per kg in Bengaluru, 107 rupees per kg in Varanasi, 98 rupees per kg in Hyderabad and at 90 rupees in Bhopal on Thursday.
Usually, tomato prices rise during July-August of the year as harvesting and transportation of supplies of perishable goods are affected by monsoons.
