Western disturbance upgraded to ‘intense’ as rogue depression sends back ‘low’ to Tamil Nadu-AP coasts

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has upgraded as ‘intense’ the status of a western disturbance expected to affect hills and plains of North-West India from Thursday, even as a remnant well-marked low-pressure area from an earlier depression over west-central Bay of Bengal is set to swing its way back to near coastal Andhra Pradesh and north coastal Tamil Nadu.

Baby cyclonic circulation

The intense western disturbance is expected to spawn an induced cyclonic circulation over south-west Rajasthan on Friday. Both the parent and offspring systems are expected to interact interact with easterlies leading to high moisture feeding from Arabian Sea as well as Bay of Bengal till Saturday, a likelihood which businessline had alluded to in these columns last week.

Rain/snow to spread out

The intense westerly will bring isolated to scattered rain/snow over the hills of the region (Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand) from Thursday to Saturday with peak activity on Friday and Saturday.

Scattered to fairly widespread rain is likely over the plains (Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi) and adjoining central India (Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh) on Friday and Saturday; and over Maharashtra and Gujarat on Saturday. Thunderstorms accompanied with hailstorms are also likely over North-West India on Saturday and Sunday.

Well-marked ‘low’

Meanwhile, the well-marked ‘low’ over west-central Bay moved west-southwest, tracing the path it had taken from coastal Andhra Pradesh last week, and lay over Monday morning over west-central and adjoining south-west Bay off south Andhra Pradesh-North Tamil Nadu coasts.

It is likely to move further west-southwest and reach near north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts by Tuesday. businessline had hinted that while weakening, the system may loiter over the Bay for sometime.

Moderate/heavy rain

This will trigger light to moderate rain at a few places over coastal Andhra Pradesh with heavy rain at isolated places for four days from Monday.

Light to moderate rain is likely at a few places over coastal Odisha on Tuesday and Wednesday with possibility of isolated heavy rain on Tuesday. Light to moderate rain is likely at many places over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for three days from Tuesday with possibility of isolated heavy rain on Wednesday and Thursday.

Thunderstorms, lightning

Thunderstorms accompanied with lightening may roam coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema for three days from Monday; over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal on Wednesday and Thursday; and over Madhya Maharashtra for three days from Thursday. The IMD advised fishermen not to venture into west-central and south-west Bay along and off Andhra Pradesh, north Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry coasts till Thursday morning.
