Trade sees cottonseed oil production going up to 15 lt by 2025
The 4th Cottonseed Oils and Meals Meeting, jointly organized by Solvent Extractors Association (SEA) of India and All India Cottonseed Crushers Association (AICOSCA) in Aurangabad recently, estimated that cottonseed oil production will rise to 15-16 lakh tons (L). ) by 2025 from the present 13-14 liters.
Sandeep Bhajoria, President of AICOSCA, speaking on the topic of “Cottonseed Oil Prospects and Issues in Qatar Roadmap by 2030” at the conclave, said that AICOSCA spreads the scientific processing of cottonseeds as opposed to the traditional processing, resulting in tremendous national gains.
Citing an article written by M Sabesh, a senior scientist at the Nagpur-based Central Cotton Research Institute, Pajoria said the article has estimated cotton production at 402.70 bales (bales of 170 kg each) by 2025.
Noting that the current availability of washed cottonseed oil is about 13-14 liters, he said that cottonseed oil production could rise to 15-16 liters after the substantial increase in cotton production by 2025. “Moreover, with the scientific processing of cottonseeds , which AICOSCA has been publishing for many years, and the availability of cottonseed oil can be greatly increased, say up to 19-20 liters, adding that cottonseed oil can certainly become one of the main sources of edible oil in the near future, thus helping to increase its production .
domestic consumption
Referring to SEA statistics, Pajuria said domestic consumption of edible oil is expected to reach 240 liters in 2022-23. This is likely to increase with increasing population and per capita income.
India currently produces about 100 liters of edible oil and the gap between demand and supply of edible oils is about 140 litres, which has to be bridged through imports.
Stressing the need for urgent attention to the scientific processing of cottonseed oil, he said that conventional processing results in huge loss of valuable cottonseed oil and other important by-products like clonals, hulls etc., an estimate of Rs.
Welcoming the gathering, Ajay Gongunwala, President, SEA India, said that cottonseed oil is a unique oil with the feature of frying. Cottonseed oil is the preferred oil by the regulated food industry for its unique frying properties, oxidation stability that maintains good flavor and preserves fried snacks and Namekin fresh for a long period of time.
He said that cottonseed cake has a relatively low biodegradability in the rumen. It is a good source of by-product protein in dairy products, and can be used further in livestock feed formulations.
