Torrent begins pilot project for blending green hydrogen with natural gas

Torrent Power said Monday that it is working on a pilot project to blend green hydrogen with natural gas in the city’s Gas Distribution (CGD) network.

The company said in a statement that the pilot project underway in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh state, is expected to be completed within eight months.

“Torrent Power is implementing a green hydrogen pilot project for blending into a CGD grid. The alkaline electrolyzer-based pilot project will blend 2.5 per cent green hydrogen (GH2) into a CGD grid, marking an important milestone in the company’s foray into the GH2 business in India.” .

GH2 is produced using the electrolysis of water powered by renewable sources. Mixing it with existing natural gas supplies enables a gradual transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy mix.

Torrent Power is one of the largest companies in the country’s energy sector, with a presence across the entire energy value chain – generation, transmission and distribution.
