Rupee falls 7 paise to close at 82.02 against US dollar

The rupee pared its initial gains and settled for the day, down 7 pounds at 82.02 (tentative) against the greenback on Thursday, following the muted trend in local stocks.

In the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 81.93 against the dollar and closed at 82.02 (temporary), recording a decrease of 7 pounds from its previous closing of 81.95.

During the session, the local unit witnessed its highest level during the day at 81.77 and 82.02 against the US dollar.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which measures the strength of the greenback against a basket of six currencies, was down 0.22 percent at 105.42.

Brent crude futures fell 0.01 percent to $82.65 a barrel.

The 30-share BSE Sensex index closed down 541.81 points, or 0.90 percent, at 59,806.28, while the broader NSE Nifty index fell 164.80 points, or 0.93 percent, to 17,589.60.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital market on Wednesday buying shares worth ₹3,671.56 crore, according to exchange data.
