Pathanamthitta Dairy to export Milma’s ghee

The Pathanamthitta Dairy Company of the Trivandrum Regional Cooperative Dairy Producers Union (TRCMPU) is set to export Milma ghee after obtaining a license.

First of all, Milma will export 6.5 tons of ghee to Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Malaysia and Mauritius.

Kerala Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development J Chinchorani has inaugurated the Ghee Export Project at the Dairy Complex. She said the state government envisaged more projects to achieve self-sufficiency in milk production.

Calf breeding

Calves breeding projects will be implemented in all regions to provide more cows and calves for dairy farmers. The minister also called for new feeding methods and rescheduling milking periods to increase milk production.

In regards to livestock health, Chinchurani said a doctor’s transport service has been provided to 29 Block panchayats and this will be extended to all panchayats by Onam, after an administrative penalty of Rs 14 crore for the project.

The minister congratulated Pathanamthitta Dairy for obtaining the export licence, and said it was recognition of the global quality standards of its dairy products.

Ganesh Kumar, MLA, said the export license would be a huge boost to the rural dairy sector, besides serving as a boost for quality products.

Calf adoption

Milma Chairman KS Mani inaugurated a district-wide ₹ 5.5 crore calves adoption project on the occasion. He said about 4,000 calves will be adopted this year.

Mani applauded TRCMPU’s efforts in obtaining the export license and added that apart from rural and urban marketing, Milma will set up outlets in other states selling all products except milk. Noting that selling milk alone may not support Milma anymore, he said it was a proud achievement that Milma’s high-quality products got buyers abroad.

TRCMPU General Manager DS Konda said the union plans to export around 110 tons of ghee within a year to net about $12 crore turnover.
