Over 91% of sugarcane dues paid to farmers in the current season: Minister

Nearly 91.16 percent of sugarcane dues have been paid to farmers up to July 17 for the current sugar season, according to a response in the Rajya Sabha on Friday.

In a written response, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said the center has taken various steps in the form of political interventions from time to time when required with the aim of facilitating payment of dues due to sugarcane farmers.

Highlighting several political interventions, she said: “As a result of these measures, about 99.9 percent of sugar cane dues have been settled until the 2020-2021 sugar seasons. For the previous sugar season 2021-22, more than 99.9 percent of sugar cane dues have been settled, and in the current sugar cane season 2022-23, about 91.6 percent of sugar cane dues have been settled on July 17.”

For the current sugar season 2022-23 (October-September), sugarcane growers have been paid ₹1.03 crore out of a total amount owed of ₹1.13 lakh crores.

Of the remaining arrears of ₹9,499 crores, there is ₹6,315 crores outstanding for farmers in Uttar Pradesh, ₹1,651 crores for farmers in Gujarat and ₹631 crores for farmers in Gujarat. farmers in Maharashtra.

The minister said that the powers have been delegated and given to the state governments and union territories to regularly monitor the status of payment of sugarcane prices to sugar mills. She added that in case of delay in payment, they take appropriate action.
