Odisha train tragedy: LIC eases claims process norms for accident victims

Insurance giant LIC has turned to action to announce several relaxations in the claims settlement process for victims Tragedy in the train Balasore in Odisha.

Siddhartha Mohanty, Chairman of the LIC, announced a series of leniency in the claims settlement process for relatives of the victims.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic train accident at Balasore, Odisha on Friday. The life insurance company is committed to supporting those affected and will expedite claims settlements to provide financial relief,” Mohanty said in the statement.

The LIC Chairman said that every effort will be made to ensure access to claimants and prompt settlement of claims for affected families.

LIC has announced several concessions to alleviate the hardships of claimants of LIC’s policies as well as of Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana.

The insurance giant said that instead of registered death certificates, a list of victims published by railways, police or any state or central authorities would be accepted as proof of death.

LIC has also established a special help desk and call center number (022-6827-6827) at the divisional and branch levels to respond to inquiries regarding claims and to provide assistance to claimants.

The Balasore train accident involving two passenger trains and a stationery goods train has claimed the lives of at least 288 people so far and left more than 1,100 injured.
