Natural rubber production up 8.3% in FY23; consumption gains over 9%

Natural rubber production grew by 8.3 percent and consumption increased by 9 percent in the 2022-23 fiscal year compared to the previous fiscal year. Production increased to 8,39,000 tons from 7,75,000 tons in 2021-22, while consumption increased from 12,38,000 tons in 2021-22 to 13,50,000 tons in 2022-23.

The Rubber Council’s Statistics Advisory Committee, which includes representatives of small and large rubber growers, processors, manufacturers of tire and non-tire products and Rubber Producers Associations (RPSs), has analyzed the performance of the Indian and global NR sector in 21street The meeting took place in Kottayam.

The committee meeting discussed changes in rubber statistics for the years 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22 compared to 2022-23.

The total demand for NR in the country showed a significant growth of 9% during the period 2022-23 compared to 2021-2022. The automotive tire sector accounted for 70 percent of the total NR consumed in the country and recorded a growth of 4.8 percent in 2022-2023 compared to 2021-22. The General Rubber Products segment recorded a positive growth of 20.4 percent during the period 2022-23 compared to 2021-22.

Rubber board efforts

India now ranks sixth in the world among the major NR rubber producing countries, accounting for 5.8 percent of the total global NR production during December 2022. The country continued to occupy the second largest consumer of NR, accounting for 9.3 percent of global consumption during 2022.

The Rubber Council has made many efforts to increase the production of NR. It distributed rain protection materials through RPSs and farmers guarded the trees so they could harvest more days into the rainy season.

The Rubber Production Incentive Scheme (RPIS) implemented by the Government of Kerala encouraged farmers to continue tapping efficiently. Leaf disease control, adoption of rubber holdings for harvesting, formation of Latex Rubber Groups (RTGs) etc. are some of the other reasons for increasing domestic rubber production.
