ICAR sanctions 2 cotton research centres for Telangana

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has approved the establishment of two All India Coordinated  Research Project Centres (ACRIP) on cotton in Telangana.

“After the bifurcation of the State, Telangana lost its representation in the national-level cotton research co-ordination centres. As a result, Prof. Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU) was unable to participate in the national cotton research system for the past decade,” a statement said here on Thursday.

PJTSAU officials met ICAR Director-General Himanshu Pathak and Deputy Director-General TP Sharma in New Delhi recently and appealed to them to consider sanctioning a research programme under the all-India programme. He suggested two centres — one at Warangal and a sub-centre at Adilabad.

“ICAR has agreed to establish the two centres and provide staff and funding to support cotton research at PJTAU. The centers will begin full-fledged research activities from the next financial year,” the Vice-Chancellor,  Aldas Janaiah, said.
