Finance ministry not considering tax waivers for Tesla: Revenue Secy

Revenue Minister Sanjay Malhotra told Reuters on Thursday that India’s finance ministry is not considering any tariff exemptions for US automaker Tesla.

Last month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was urging the automaker to make a “major investment” in the country, adding that such an announcement was expected soon.

In the past, talks between the US automaker and the Indian government have included seeking import tariffs for its electric cars, which India has refused.

“Any fee waiver for Tesla is not under actual consideration by the Revenue Department, yet,” Malhotra said on Thursday.
