Export demand boosts orthodox leaf prices at Kochi tea auctions 

Orthodox leaf market in Kochi auctions received some boost, thanks to the increased purchases by Russian and Iran buyers this week. This led to a strong demand in sale 50, witnessing 88 per cent sales out of the offered 1,98,111 kg.

According to traders, Russian exporters are on a buying spree to complete their commitments before the end of December, so that the consignment will reach by January end. In the absence of the brew from the North due to winter, Iran buyers are also active in South Indian auctions.

CTC leaf irregular

Auctioneers Forbes, Ewart & Figgis said that the whole leaf and brokens was firm to dearer, while the rest was irregular and lower. Exporters to Middle East and CIS countries were active and some upcountry interest was also noticed.

CTC leaf market was irregular and lower with major blenders extending fair support. The offered quantity was 54,173, witnessing only 78 per cent sales .

In CTC dust, the market was firm to dearer due to active participation of blenders, which together absorbed 70 per cent of the total CTC dust sold. The offered quantity was 5,39,275 kg, witnessing a good demand. The market for good liquoring teas was steady and sometimes dearer. However, high-priced popular marks of Kerala were lower and witnessed some withdrawal. There was a subdued demand from upcountry buyers and exporters.

Orthodox dust market was firm to dearer with a 100 per cent sales out of the offered quantity of 8,500 kg. Exporters and upcountry buyers were the main stakeholders.
