Elgi Equipments Ltd, the manufacturer of air compressors, has introduced assembly lines at its unit in Tamil Nadu that are entirely run by women, the company said on Tuesday.

In a statement, the Coimbatore-based company said it affirms its commitment to building an inclusive and gender-diverse workforce through women’s empowerment and skills development.

Twenty female employees will manage the air end assembly line, jacketed air end assembly line and upper block assembly line for the new generation ELGi compressor at the company’s ELGi Air center in Coimbatore.

ELGi Equipments said that after graduating from a three-year technical training program that includes modules on machinery, welding, electrical work, engineering and production technologies at ELGi’s vocational training school, female candidates are assigned directly to the facility.

“In keeping with ELGi’s focus on promoting a safe and healthy work environment, every woman working on the shop floor has received comprehensive first aid training,” the company said.

The statement added that a dedicated occupational health center has been established to ensure immediate support whenever needed, to prioritize well-being, and to promote a safe and comfortable work environment for female employees.

Earlier in March, heavy commercial vehicle maker Ashok Leyland unveiled a new engine production line at its Hosur manufacturing facility, which is operated entirely by female employees. The company has established the production line with 80 female employees.
