Centipede in ice cream Amul seeks return of tub to launch investigation
Ice cream maker Amul said on Monday that it has requested a customer in Noida to return an ice cream tub after she reported finding a centipede inside.
“We deeply regret the inconvenience caused to her due to this incident. During our meeting with the customer, we requested her to provide the ice cream tub for investigation. Unfortunately, the customer refused to hand it over,” the company said, adding that it would proceed with further investigation upon receiving the package from the customer.
The issue pertains to the company’s packaging and supply chain operations.
Meanwhile, the food safety authority in Noida has initiated an investigation into the matter.
On Sunday, a woman from Noida shared photos on social media platform X, showing a centipede in the packaging.
“Once we receive the complaint pack from the customer, we will thoroughly investigate the matter and update our customers with the findings,” the company further stated.
This is the second such incident reported within a week. On June 13, a customer in Mumbai’s Malad area alleged finding a severed human thumb in an ice cream cone ordered online.
In response, a company spokesperson said, “Product quality and safety are our highest priorities. We take this incident very seriously. Manufacturing at the third-party facility has been halted. The implicated product has been isolated at the facility, warehouses, and in the market.”
Inspections at the site were conducted by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the state Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Following an inspection of the factory premises where the batch was manufactured, FSSAI’s West region office in Mumbai suspended the manufacturer’s licence.
The manufacturer, Fortune Dairy Industries based in Indapur, Pune, underwent inspections by the state FDA at their premises in Mumbai, with samples from the batch collected, said FSSAI.
“Interim action has been taken to suspend the FSSAI licence and production activities at the factory premises until further notice. An explanation has been sought from the food business operator responsible for selling/delivering the product in question. Further investigation into the complaint is ongoing,” the regulator observed.
