Sterling Biotech begins work on precision fermentation dairy protein plant in Gujarat
Sterling Biotech Limited, a joint venture between Perfect Day and Zydus Lifesciences, has commenced construction of the “world’s first precision fermentation-based dairy protein manufacturing facility” at Bharuch in Gujarat.
The foundation stone was laid in November 2024 for the 27-acre project. This state-of-the-art facility is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2026, according to an official release Thursday. However, the company refused to divulge the investment made in the project.
It is designed as a large-scale production hub for precision fermentation-based dairy proteins and aims to meet the growing global demand for sustainable food ingredients. The facility’s capacity is already substantially booked, reflecting strong market interest. Furthermore, provisions have been made for land and infrastructure to support future expansion.
Commenting on the development, TM Narayan, CEO of Perfect Day Inc., stated, “This facility marks a significant milestone in transforming the global food industry. By leveraging precision fermentation technology, we are advancing the creation of high-quality dairy proteins without the environmental footprint of traditional methods. This plant underscores our commitment to a healthier planet and a sustainable future, setting new global benchmarks in sustainable production practices.” Zydus Lifesciences acquired a 50 per cent stake in Sterling Biotech in August 2024. Perfect Day’s precision-fermented proteins have already gained recognition across applications such as ice creams, sports nutrition, and baked goods.
Shayri Roychoudhury, Chief Business Operations Officer at Perfect Day Inc., added, “This facility will produce fermentation-based dairy proteins that are not only better for the planet but also meet the diverse needs of customers worldwide. Its advanced production processes will address critical challenges in the food and beverage industry.”
