Heavy rain batters south Tamil Nadu, Delta districts as IMD sees fresh ‘low’ brewing by Sunday

Exceptionally heavy rain was recorded over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal in the 24 hours ending on Friday morning due to a well-marked low-pressure area over the Gulf of Mannar. However, by Friday, it weakened into a low-pressure area.

It is expected to weaken further and become inconsequential on Saturday, only to be replaced by a fresh low-pressure area upstream over south Andaman Sea by Sunday and sets up a march across the Bay of Bengal.

A parent cyclonic circulation may form in advance over south Andaman Sea as early as by Saturday, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Headed towards TN coast

The fresh low-pressure area will move towards the Tamil Nadu coast on Monday and Tuesday and bring to bear its influence on the coast in the form of moderate to heavy to extremely heavy rain. On Sunday, heavy rain of 7 cm+ may lash the Andaman and Nicobar Islands ,while thunderstorms accompanied by lightning may roam over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

Squally weather with wind speeds of 35-45 km/hr gusting to 55 km/hr may prevail over Andaman sea. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas on Sunday; the Comorin area, Tamil Nadu coast, and Gulf of Mannar on Tuesday; Andaman Sea on Saturday and Sunday; south-east Bay of Bengal on Sunday and Monday; and over south-west and west-central Bay on Tuesday.
